New Guild Certified Framer Study Guide

There is no doubt that the Fine Art Trade Guild is recognised internationally for setting and maintaining standards for best framing practice as well as for the mountboard we all use daily. Also internationally recognised is the Certified Framer qualification, which is designed to identify capable framers, provide a benchmark for professional framers and to develop standards of practice in the framing industry.

A brand new 2021 edition of the Certified Framer Study Guide is now available. It’s the culmination of many hours work by members of the Framing Standards and Qualifications Committee (FSQC) working party which was tasked with updating the 2018 revision. The working party members come from England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and Holland, and are all hands on professional framers, with many years combined experience. They hold Advanced qualifications, and most are long time Certified Framer examiners. They were supported by a team of similarly qualified advisors and proof-readers, who hailed from as far away as Canada, and whose input was vital to the completed publication.

That’s not to say that the team have ‘made it up as they went along’ though. Throughout the revision process, professional resources from, for example, the Institute of Conservation, the Tate Museum and the British Museum amongst others, were crosschecked and referenced.

So, what’s new?

The Study Guide has been almost totally rewritten, and now contains:
Detail about the four NEW mountboard standards
An informative Foreword
A comprehensive explanation of the NEW Four Levels of Framing
A section explaining CPD and how to gain CPD credits
A Glossary of Terms
The NEW revised Tapes and Adhesives for Mounting and Framing Artwork on Paper document

What the new Study Guide isn’t

It’s important to remember that the new Study Guide is not a ‘how to do it’ guide. There is invariably more than one way to construct some elements of the framing package correctly (mounting artwork, for example), and FSQC recognise this.

What the new Study Guide is

The FSQC has spent many hours revising, cross-referencing and editing the new Certified Framer Study Guide.
The committee members believe that it is now the most comprehensive guide to best framing practice available anywhere. It should also be a ‘must have’ reference for any framing workshop. Perhaps it’s time to order yours now!
