large mirror frame commission

Post by Geoff »

This is one of two mirror commissions I am working on. The entire frame will be gilded and coloured as required and features a number of different techniques, pastiglia. incising, turning. Designs will also be punched onto elements of the frame once gilded.

How much you charge for that?

Hi There,

Thanks for your comments... As you might expect, using both yellow and white gold it is quite expensive. There is, as you can see, quite a bit of detail already on the frame with other work to be added after gilding. I never mention however, customer or price with any of my work. This incidentally, is for the interior design market. It's size is approximately 122cm X 67cm at it's widest point.

Give us a ballpark figure :D
I'm not a wood worker so I'm not totally sure I can appreciate the work that has gone into something like this. I don't even know what half the techniques used are.
I can cut and join four bits of wood (or plastic).

Price would be in the region of £1300-£1500 excluding the bevel edged mirror, that's someone elses responsibility though I will fit it.

take care!

So how long would it take to make of those. Bevelled Mirror that size that size would cost approx £25.00

cut to template and custom bevelled - if you can get a good quality mirror to that spec for £25 let me know who does them - I could use them for a short while - until they go bankrupt at least.

A job like that would be more than double in the US. The gold alone would be $400.

Geoff,

How many hours of labor do you think it will take?
design and customer relations
wood fabrication
gesso
application of design
gilding
finishing / toning

Just for reference....... What does a licensed plumber or electrician charge per hour?

BTW, I'm seriously impressed with the frame so far. Beautiful work!

I would love to see a picture of the finished result.

beautiful work Geoff

I make things like this too and the time in them is sometimes unaccounted for as there is a real love of creating the end result.

I may be better off being a plumber!!!

Just framed an albino stuffed badger.

Like the albino stuffed badger comments! I suppose If someone wants to stuff a badger it might as well be an albino! Regarding £25 for the mirror. I payed more than that for a mirror for my parrot to gaze into. Cant have my "Norwegian Blue" looking at a frosted image of itself.

I have been very fortunate in the many years of my involvement with framing. I have made and or finished frames for some of the worlds "alleged" finest paintings. Not that that makes me any better than anyone else!!!not at all!!!!! My passion for old master frames has inspired me considerably over the past twenty five years or so and I have an extremely wide range of material at hand. This has bought many very useful contacts in my direction as you might imagine and one thing leads to another etc, etc.

I really enjoy seeing what people create themselves, you never stop learning.
