Grahame ask Sarah at Gunnar for a copy of the software, it will work without the machine an at least give you an idea of what it can do before you get the 601.

I'll get in contact with Sarah, i have her business card at the shop.

Spit, hitting the enter key after entering the sizes of a mat and opening is what activates it. I see no problem with this at all and have been using it quite successfully for about 6 or 7 years.
Just like if you enter a number, then a plus sign, then another number into a calculator, it doesn't automatically tell you the answer until you activate the function with the '=' key!

As far as drawing special shapes is concerned, I have had no problem drawing shapes with Corel Draw on the rare occasion that has been necessary. I think that has been three times in 6 or 7 years. Many special shapes can be easily made up using several of the huge number of standard shapes and modifying their properties to get a quick result.
