masked mounts

Post by markw »

I occasionally have to cut mounts where i need to mask the surface of the board so that i can decorate the bevel edges. The masking is best done by using a very low tack tape applied before cutting - giving a nice sharp edge to the decorated board.

when cutting on a conventional cutter this task is fairly straight forward as you work with a piece of board of the correct size and you can mark out the area with a pencil before applying the tape. If cutting with a cmc (this is based on the Valiani - others may differ but I am sure the principle will be the same) I set up the mount with the aperture 5mm smaller than required - make a false cut on the machine with the head set at a minimum depth - so that you get a very shallow cut - 5mm inside the aperture to use as a guide for the masking. - apply masking - delete the guide aperture from set up and replace with correct size - cut mount and decorate - remove tape for a perfect decorated edge to your mount.
