Come home to a real fire

Post by Roboframer »

Beechwood fires burn bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year
Store your beech for Christmas tide
With new holly laid beside
Chestnut's only good they say
If for years 'tis stored away
Birch and firwood burn too fast
Blaze too bright and do not last
Flames from larch will shoot up high
Dangerously the sparks will fly
But Ashwood green and Ashwood brown
Are fit for a Queen with a golden crown

Oaken logs, if dry and old
Keep away the winter's cold
Poplar gives a bitter smoke
Fills your eyes and makes you choke
Elmwood burns like churchyard mould
E'en the very flames burn cold
Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread
So it is in Ireland said
Apple wood will scent the room
Pear wood smells like flowers in bloom
But Ashwood wet and Ashwood dry
A King may warm his slippers by.

Stains nice too

You got it one, Roboframer. We couldn't be without the wood-burner during the winter months, and although we ordered our wood a bit late this year  we have now got it split, stacked and drying in the barn. I guess that any bare wood offcuts make for good kindling too!

A word of warning: If you live an area where there maybe discarded ammo, check your wood carefully before putting it in the stove! Hubby nearly had a heart attack last winter when the wood-burner went bang. What we found lurking at the back of the stove looked remarkably like a cartridge from belt ammo, must have been buried in a piece of wood! Solid brass, about 8cm long. Hot stove+ammo=BANG! I love the smell of cordite in the evening!
