Looks like a jpeg file has been renamed with the png extension rather than being reformatted as a png file (or maybe vise versa).

For example, renaming a Word file with the AVI extension does not make it into a movie.

I've downloaded images now and then which are not readable due to having the wrong extension.

You've got an iffy file mate.

John, I'm actually reasonably computer literate, but thanks for the word file/ video file analogy. I'm not sure whether you were being sarcastic or not!
Prospero, I think the FF firewall spotted I was trying to upload of file saved from FB!

Sorry justintime, I had no way of knowing that.

However, bear in mind that my reply is intended for a wider audience than just yourself, and that many folk who search the forum in the future, looking for an answer to the same question will be grateful for the little extra explanation I have provided, and will not find it to be in any way "sarcastic".

It was a copy n paste photo from a popular social media site, pretending to be a jpeg.

Possibly a sneaky trick to stop people copying the photo to elsewhere.

Did you solve the file type problem? If the solution isn't as straightforward as a .png to .jpg extension rename then just open it in any picture editor or viewer and re-save it in the format of your choice and let the software correct the hex issues.

Thanks Mike, it did resolve itself eventually. Jumping between a phone and a pc maybe.
