Uh-oh - wot worked before no longer does!

"The image must be at least 0 pixels wide, 0 pixels high and at most 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high. The submitted image is 600 pixels wide and 800 pixels high."

Seems 800x600 is OK (landscape) but if you rotate to portrait and make it 600x800 it won't have it.

Will try a landscape to confirm.

Erm - I hate this system. On the old one, you could add shots within the post - i.e. text betwen the photos. Plus the photos were small and let you get on with reading the replies - sometimes the small photos would be large enough to not have to worry about clicking to enlarge.

The photo also intrudes in to the user's details if there are only one or two lines of text above it - I know this because most of this post is edited - first post only contained the word 'Test' above and the photo overlapped my details.

It's a backward step I think, the old way was great, far better than TFG's.

I concur, Robo. I much prefer the old "add image to post" facility.

In particular the "interspersed text and images" style is great for step-by-step tutorial posts. John, can the "Add Image..." function be re-enabled?

I can't edit my last post - look at the time difference - 15 mins or so.

Anyway - the attached image (800x600) needs to be scrolled too.

It looks very nice. I'm not sure why, but some features don't always display properly so I have to reload the screen until everything is working properly, particularly the scroll bars. It might be a windows 98 issue, but I can live with it until I get a new computer and operating system.

So - two dislikes so far, editing time limit and photos - the same results with photos can be achieved with photobouquet etc, which was what I used to use before I got my head around the other way.

A system within the forum should work better than an external image hosting site and the old system did.

John, a stór, before I go any further let me say that I think you've done a first-class job behind the scenes (no pun intended ) to create this fab new forum space for us, and all your hard work is very much valued and appreciated! Isn't it a killer that we're whinging already! (Ungrateful lot... ) Please be assured that my comments on this thread stem from my bubbling enthusiasm for the very impressive fruits of your labours!

A wish-list item: Are you considering offering user-selectable skins for the new-look Forum?

Support for the old forum software will cease in a couple of months, so some sort of change was inevitable.

There are a lot of things about the new forum software that I don't like. Some of them I might be able to eliminate, and some that I now think of as a retrograde step, that I will begin to appreciate as they become more familiar. And there a few features that I suspect will always irk me.

Overall, I hope that the pros will outweigh the cons.

Be assured that all comments are very much appreciated. I will do my best to sort problems as they arise.

Not happy with the avatar & info on the right hand side. Not seen this on any other forum and it is not intuitive. Please do not allow avatars to get any bigger !.

I like the avatars on the right hand side ... or maybe I do ... or perhaps I don't ... dunno .. maybe it depends whose avatar it is ...

The obvious wish list of improvements (that have already been mentioned) include links opening a new window (though I can always right-click to do that) and improved handling of images.

Hi Keith,

In software terms, a skin is a "display style" or "look" that allows you to personalise how the application appears onscreen (colour scheme, etc.), but which does not affect the functionality of the software. An easy example is the colour scheme you chose for Windows. Skins can include different headers and other graphical features, too.

To see how skins can work, check on TFG. At the very bottom of each page, on the left-hand side you will find a drop down list of display styles.

I asked the question because, although fine during the day, I find the brighter forum screens a bit tiring on the eyes in the evening.

Appreciate your efforts John. I have seen a few other sites "upgraded" recently and do not understand why the developers feel the need to make such drastic changes without giving you admin folk an easy way to modify the look. Looks like "open source" is not really as democratic as we would like to think !. I am sure I can get used to anything in time, its just that some features should be common to all bulletin boards. However this look should keep the Chinese happy as they read from right to left.....
