Let's all sing from the same hymn sheet

Post by Roboframer »

"When replying to a post, it is often advantageous to quote sections of the original post. However, quoting an entire message can be excessive

Save other people time and bandwidth by quoting only when necessary, and then only enough to make clear what you are responding to"

1. Sometimes an 'entire post' can be one or two lines.

2. Most times, most people will realise, quickly, that they don't need to read all that quoted carp - they already read it once - and just move on.

3. As for bandwidth - well the reply to something, without a quote, could be excessive; the quote, just like any reply, is just text - a reply could be made with lots of very nice but uneccessary photos (?)

4. What's the big deal anyway? It's not like it's something that happens all the time or even very often - and when/if it does, it's usually newi-sh members that perhaps have not yet realised that quoted posts can be edited - or maybe think they have to quote a post to reply to it - I've seen that. But it's never caused this much fuss!

In order to make the forum easier to peruse, the administrator, when checking through each day's collection of posts, removes/edits superfluous quotations (or as many as time will permit). Every day two or three get the chop and over the life of the forum, thousands have bit the dust.

Hasn't anyone noticed?

In an attempt to reduce, if not eliminate, this daily chore, I have appealed to members to quote "only when necessary, and then only enough to make clear what you are responding to"

I'm bewildered that anyone would even contemplate starting a thread opposing this.

I'm not 'opposing' it - just asking if it's a big deal/problem.

Like I said - I've seen it happen but it doesn't cause me a problem - it seems to be the norm on some forums though - quotes within quotes within quotes within ...... and it's difficult to work out who said what -but with this server (if that's the right word) it's quite easy to read the post without anything quoted within it.

I must admit that I had not noticed these edits. Out of curiosity, J, typically at what time of day do you carry out the "forum housework"?

That nobody noticed the removal of thousands of lines of text over the years would confirm that the quotes were pretty much redundant in the first place.

As you know Moglet, all edits are carried out under laboritory conditions and with surgical precision.

However, I will not be tricked so easily into revealing the times when these proceedures occur, or the location of the secret bunker. Suffice it to say that no kittens have ever been harmed in the execution of this delicate task.

I sincerely hope that your due diligence also applies to adult moggies, J.
