Framing odd shaped jigsaws anyone ?

Post by Bagpuss »

Hi,
a good customer of mine is threatening to bring in a dolphin shaped jigsaw ... now I have framed jigsaws over the years and they've generally been rectangular not dolphin shaped, I stick them down using drymount film onto 2mm MDF board. I'm thinking that I would have to profile the dolphin shape with a fancy mount on my Gunnar, something else I'd have to figure out :Slap:

Has anyone got any photos of "funny shaped" jigsaws they've done and is a funny shaped mount around it the only option ?
Thanks in advance,
Adam/Bagpuss

You get all the best jobs Adam :giggle: :giggle:

I just stick to rectangles.

Wet mount it on to mount board, colour to suit, then rebate spacers.

Same, as Roboframer here, I think a dolphin shaped mount would be very cheesy.

Get some dry-mount film. Keep the paper on. Put jigsaw on it and draw round it with a pencil.
Cut out the shape, just inside the pencil line. Peel one side and place dolphin-shaped film on mountboard.
Put in press for a minute or two. Take out and let cool a bit. Peel top paper and put jigsaw on the tacky film
so that no film is visible at the edges. Quick squeeze in press and bingo. :P

How do you get the jigsaw on to the adhesive?

It has to be flipped over so adhesive, or if it was square, adhesive board/film can be applied to the back of it.

You'd need to cut the dolphin shape out of the mount board and then you'd have to stick that to another board.

Same as Robo except I would drymount onto foam core then cut round the dolphin. Next I would rebate the foam core 5mm then glue the foam board onto the mountboard. It would look like a float mount.

We have done a lot of these but always rectangular, but the frame would definitely be rectangular and as we have a Trucut there is no chance of fancy freehand shapes

The ones i have done in the past i have done as a block mount.

Simply mount to 9mm custom board. Jigsaw, file, belt sander etc. to edge of jigsaw and hen pain edge.

They look great and simple.

Just a thought.....

Is the subject of the dolphin-shaped jigsaw actually a dolphin?

Or is it something like the houses of parliament in a dolphin-shape?

Just wondrin'

Carry On....
