Large Poster - in sections...

Hi folks

I've had two of these in today ...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TUPAC-SHAKUR-G ... 3LTD+tupac

They want them done in the cheapest possible way - I've already told them that due to the size it'll not be budget framing :)

Anyway, they originally wanted each piece to be beside the next, tight so to remove the illusion of the separate pieces. My only concern was the practical aspect - getting it wrong will ruin everything as the chances of removing the piece from a sticky board would almost zero.

Then I thought to make a 'feature' of the gaps - almost to create a tile effect. Get some jumbo board and get someone to cut 9 apertures with a 5mm gap. The overall size is around 1255 x 895.

Anyone else got any ideas? - I even thought about mounting each onto some foamboard and attaching each piece onto a piece of jumbo board to give a floating effect?

I dunno what's best

Cheers
Steven

Most people do not know this, but post it stickers use a wax based adhesive with limited tack which is generally always removable even after many years later, provided you don't subject the adhesive to pressure and heat. Heating tends to make the bond permanent.

There are three different adhesive aerosol spray adhesive, which I seem to remember are produced by 3M's, but it may be another company. The adhesives are called something like "Spray mount", "Photo mount" and "Photo fix". One of these has a light tack and is designed to be fully and easily removable after many years and is probably the only safe way to do this for most people.

I think this may be the solution that you are looking for. I don't know if this spray would be conservation quality, or not, but it's probably the easiest solution without resorting to specialist materials and techniques. Alternatively you could pay a paper conservator to mount these onto a flat substrate.

Hi Mark, thanks for the reply - actually I did think about re-adjustable type sprays but I was concerned that over time things might start to lift or or curl. Do you reckon this might be a possible side effect - as that solution would be the easiest which is what I'm after :)

Don't know what mounting equipment you have but this could be done by hand. Don't bother trying to mount everything in one go as it were and I don't think a multi aperture window mount would work either mate

Each section is small enough to mount by hand with a hand brayer roller. I'd use something like Arqadia fast-mount permanent and trim right up flush to the edge of the print. You then have a choice on how to display it on a suitable substate... foamboard maybe or mdf. Each panel could be butted up close to the next or a small gap as you say which I think would look good. Small foamboard pedestals behind each one to give it that floating look (as you say) would look even better. But I guess butted up to each panel is probably best as that is how it is shown on Amazon and what your customer is probably expecting.

The cheapest way, which you customer has asked for, would be just to mount to self adhesive board and trim and hand them over like that. Your customer can then hang each one with double sided sticky foam pads or whatever.

Or better still, tell them to hang their Tupac with BluTack :giggle:

Either sticking the mounted panels directly to the wall or on a black painted substrate I think looks good. I think it's better to emphasise the gaps.

Where I used to work, we would blockmount them to 12mm MDF, using 9 blacks cut to size, we would wet glue the prints, then pop them in a vacuum press for 5 mins

Spray glue is unpredictable, I have seen other try and do the same and within weeks the prints fell off the MDF blocks

Of course , the customer could always wallpaper paste them on the wall for the price they cost

If you are going to do it with self adhesive board, then it's probably wise to only fold back a narrow strip of the release paper next to the adjoining section already stuck down to prevent the self adhesive from grabbing hold of the print section until you are ready and then pulling rest of the release paper from underneath the print.

This is not the way to do this! Mount each print separately is the best way!!

Oh, I thought that the preference was to mount them as one.

Those mockups look good :) I do think the gaps add to the overall appearance too. Blutack for Tupac! I wish I could tell the customer the gag but it belongs to her son & don't think appreciates his taste :) I think I'll quote her for the floating effect.

Cheers guys, some nice ideas

Hmmmm - I've quoted her £150 each, using Arqadia 452000167. All items spaced & 'floating' on foamboard. She things it's waaaaaayyyyy over her budget. Am I completely off course with that pricing? :? :sweating:

The poster only cost £12.99, so she ain't going to spend a lot to get it framed, if you try and do it on the cheap, using spray mount or self-adhesive board and it ripples or bend, she will be back to complain , I would walk away from it now, how much time have you wasted so far, sourcing the moulding working out a price, coming on the Forum and asking and coming back to check for solutions
moan over :giggle:  I have turned down jobs like this in the past, and don't regret it

I haven't really wasted too much time actually - I always enjoy the forum stuff so I don't really consider that working :) - part of me wanted her to say no anyway if I'm honest - grouping and getting the spacing right would have been a nightmare. But anyway, I always appreciate the feedback. btw - sometimes there's nothing better than a good moan :giggle:

Also forgot to say, she would most probably want you to fit them :head:  :Slap:

Forum browsing is research, well that's what I tell the wife :sweating: :giggle:

I would say your price is fair and I would say the same if the art work was in one piece :Slap: There's a bit of work involved with this job so stick to your quote. It's not a small frame at 1255 x 895 and with a far bit of fiddly mounting.

Since clicking on the link in the OP to have a look at the poster, I'm now getting emails from Amazon regarding the damn thing! :Slap:

Could you sell her some sheets of foam core and a bottle of spray mount?

That would be a budget solution for her and a (little) bit of profit for you...

I'm not that convinced about selling her the spray mount and foamboard. To get something that size to go down flat and stay flat is not going to be easy for someone who has no experience of anything like this.
