Supplies advice please

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie and I'm looking for some advice on sourcing supplies. I live in North Wiltshire and am having trouble finding a local-ish (Bath, Bristol, Swindon?) source of framing supplies. I've travelled to DIY Framing in Wycombe but it's a bit of a journey, any recommendations? What do most people do - travel or buy online and use pre-chopped mouldings? Thanks in advance.

When I set up framing from home I used to travel to Lion (about an hour away) but quickly realised it was eating too much of my time. Unless your main supplier is on your doorstep it’s so much easier to have the stuff delivered.

Wessex and Centrado have weekly van deliveries, the other main suppliers use Tuffnels/DX to deliver. Not too far from you in Gloucester is Acorn Picture Frame Supplies, call Mervyn and ask if he delivers in your area.

Wessex Pictures/Frinton Mouldings (Have merged I believe.) have branches that cover the whole country with a
van delivery service. They do the whole range of framing supplies and I've always found them very reliable and friendly.

Various other stuff available from https://www.lionpic.co.uk

There are other moulding suppliers, but those two do the widest range of everything else. :D

Hi John
My main suppliers are Larson Juhl and Wessex and Lions.
Everything delivered.
Larson Juhl for mouldings, usually chops.
Wessex for mountboards backboards foam boards glass.
Lions for the best range of sundries and small tools and equipment.
Everyone does chops except Frinton who have just stopped.
Good luck.

I see from your profile that you class yourself as a hobbist. Are you intending only to be framing for yourself, or are you planning to at some point become a serious business. The answer to yhis question may help to define what you are looking for from a supplier, so it worth thinking about. Some suppliers have a more extensive range of items that they supply than others and the way that they cover the cost of doing business, can be different as well.

You will find that the way that they cover delivery charges and things like minimum order charges won't always be exactly the same. Every supplier will have an understanding of what it will cost them to be doing business with you and this is just one of those facts of life and you will need to ask the right questions and have an understanding of what this means. The likelyhood will be that it will be best at first to deal with a company that has a local van delivery service.

They will be able to advise you about their delivery charge per order and the value of order necessary to get free delivery. I use only one company which operates a van delivery service and that is Wessex. As far as I know, their van Deliveries cover most of the UK mainland and they are very profesional and reliable. In addition to Wessex, I also use Simons, Rose & hollis and Lion. Initially, you probably will use which ever supplier that will best suit your needs, but get a few catalogues from others so that you know who does what and when you are ready you can take it from there.

Best wishes,
Mark
