Floating an old poster

Post by StevenG »

Evening everyone, I've got an old poster (photos attached). The owner wants it float mounted as they, understandably, want to see the edges - quite literally wear 'n tear. The only thing is I can't get anything to stick to it. It's actually fairly brittle & there's a odd coating on the back. Any self adhesive tape just comes straight back off, I've even tried gummed tape but again it just peels off with 'dusty' fragments attached. Is this the paper starting to disintegrate? It probably wasn't supposed to last longer than the initial weekend & that was 40 years ago now :)

Any tips or would there be an alternative framing option I could suggest?

You could sandwich it between two sheets of acrylic and seal the edges with scotch magic tape.
You should find that the static and pressure will hold it in place.

Good suggestion from Justintime. :D

I would maybe place it on a sheet of linen covered mountboard which will give a bit of 'grip' from behind.
Then place acrylic on top.

Old posters were not meant to last and it seems that the paper has deteriorated a bit. Seen a few like this. :|

I agree with Prosperro. Minimal change to the original condition of the artwork is the most logical way to go. The aged apearance of this particular item is an important attribute of what is an original and aged item. It's authenicity and age is there for all to see.

That looks great, I like the way you've kept it real. Preserved what it is, warts and all.
