Huge aperture mount

Post by photech54 »

Hi everyone,

I have a client who requires an aperture mount with a 158cm x 70cm aperture and at least a 7cm border.

So in total the mount size will be at least 172xm x 84cm.

Any ideas where I might be able to source such a thing?! I certainly can't cut one here!!

Thanks in advance!

I use flat obeche fillets for jobs like this. Rose and Hollis some quite wide ones and they can be painted the desired colour.

There are several sources for mount board of sufficient size (48" x 72") for that project. The color assortment is limited to WHITE.

My question is "why so small of a border 7 cm?"

That will be a very, very flimsy mount to handle without tearing.

Just simply being able to cut a mount of such dimensions is going to be very difficult. Assuming that you can cut it with a hand held moulnt cutter you will still need a very large flat cutting surface and also a suitable layer of mountboard underneath while cutting. Even using obeche fillets, this still won't be easy. How are you going to support the long lengths to stop them from sagging over such a long length?

I don't know if this helps, but Wessex Pictures stock some extremely large sheets of foamboard, which could be made in to a mount and then wrapped.

Personally, I would gladly let someone else have all the hassle and decline the job!

Rose&Hollis do two flat sections - A231 and A245. One has a bevel edge and one a coved edge. Both are 70mm wide.
I've used both to make oversize mats, painted off-white.
** if you paint them then they will need spacing from the glass slightly to avoid weird optical effects.**
The timber needs to be normalised in a dry room for a day or two prior to cutting so the joins don't shrink and show a gap later.
It's a good way of making a huge mount. Cutting it out of a sheet would be very difficult. Not impossible, but very irksome. :sweating:
The sheer logistics of getting a pristine sheet to your bench in the first place are not to be underestimated.

Anything over 1200mm x 1200mm I tell the customer it is too big and suggest a wooden slip.
From any sort of distance it looks the same anyway.
