Hanging Artwork Flat Against Wall

Post by iorek »

Hi Folks

I have a customer who wants to hang 12 framed artworks flat against a wall.

Are there any hanging systems/tools that can manage this?

Thanks

Edit - I should say that I mean as vertical as possible. I assume that there should still be an air gap in behind?

If you string a frame to hang upon the wall and then hang in on a hook fixed to the wall, the top of the picture will always hang away from the wall, because the centre of gravity is always forward of the hanging cords and fixings. This is way, I recommend French cleats as they pull the top of the frame back in towards the wall.

Small frame bumpers on the rear of each corner, will limit how close the frame will be from the surface of the wall to allow a small gap for air flow. Very simple and very easy! Is very simple to make French cleats from wood, if you have a table saw and some cheap and thin pieces of wood. French cleats can even become an extra sales item, if you are so inclined.

I suggest a look on the Lion website - perhaps something like this?

If you put those top and bottom it would do the trick

Springlock fixings are primarily designed for security but they also keep the frame vertical.

I came up with these a while back. They attach to the back of the frame/canvas and give a stand off of about 15mm which gives a nice floating effect.

Just put two hooks in the wall, about 3/4 the width of the frame, then hang the cord over both, this will pull the top in and the picture will not move at all

Getting picture to hang flat to the wall, is not something which people around me seem to pay much attention to. Locally there's quite a lot of older housing stock and a lot of these don't have particularly flat walls anyway. Many older building have exposed beams in ceilings and walls, but this often creates a reluctance to fix hooks to either the walls, or the exposed beams. With many of these older buildings being perhap 400 years old, or more it is not uncommon for pictures to be stood on shelves in ancient cubby holes and the like.

As a result, I dont think that herdly anyone has asked me about hanging picture flat to the wall scarcely at all. There are also plenty of damp walls, which can cause problems, so hammering pins in to a damp wall often detaches big lumps of plaster, or what ever. I don't think that I have sold more than a few picture hooks in all the the almost twenty years that I have been in the town. Ask me about how to waterproof a frame to hang or a damp wall and that's another matter. There are so many damp walls around here. Water resistant backing boards are used as a fairly standard routine as a result.

If you want them to hang parallel and vertically in line i would use aluminium split battens. you can by it in long lengths and cut so size or if the pictures are to sit tight against each other then one long length.

Gooding Aluminium sell it in different sizes 0208 692 2255
