Morso not cutting all the way.

Post by bookmark »

Can anyone shed some light on my problem. I am just setting a new to me very old Red Morso Guillotine. Machine has very sharp blades and at least one stamped Morso. ( will look again later ) The problem seems to be not cutting all the way thru on Final cut. Leaving a 5mm piece on the the bottom back edge the rest of the back edge is a very clean cut. As I say the machine is very old the type you can see thru. The spindle arm is straight but the nut is loose so moves around (if I making myself clear ) Question should the bolt be tighter I assume would mean the arm keeping the arm straight.
Any thoughts please

Are your blades flush where they meet at the front? Are they moving far enough forward/towards you on the final cut, to clear the moulding? The blades usually have date stamps. Are they old? They may appear sharp but if they have been sharpened for years, they will be significantly shorter which can start to cause issues. Sorry i dont know what the spindle arm is. Some pics would be useful. Have you looked at the Morso F manual on the Danlist website, it's a different model obviously, but may give you some pointers. I once found that there was some play where the sliding handle bolts in, realigning and tightening these bolts improved the depth of my cut.

If the blades have been sharpened multiple times then they get smaller with each grind. The way to
compensate is to adjust the tie-bar that connects the cutter block to the pedal by slackening the locking nuts
and moving them, thus lowering the blades. As you do this you are also effectively reducing the cutting capacity,
but this is not a problem unless you are cutting very wide moulding.

Justin Prospero thank you for the replies. Trying to lift up photos with reply.
The spindle/bar is attached to pedal which pushes all the way down to floor. It waves about when about half way depressed but still goes all the way to floor. Blades are level at top.

That looks like a beauty!
Sadly I'm struggling to see exactly what shape moulding that is from the photos.
If you can post some in focus photos that would be easier!

When the pedal is pushed all the way done, are the blades all the way down below the bottom blades?

Zooming in on the blades it looks like there is a problem with the bottom part of perhaps the left blade. They seem to be misaligned and I would either try a different set if you have one or try to line them up better. They should meet seamlessly at the front whereby if you skim your finger nail towards the front your nail should skim off the blade without catching any edge. :?:

On image 3, you need to raise the top nut by about 2" then tighten the bottom nut to hold the red metal pedal attachment - this will fix the height issue and any waving about of the pedal. You could add a locking nut under the bottom nut to stop any further movement or make periodic checks.

She's a beauty indeed! You should be able to date it from the serial No. It may be older than I am.

One thing: When you get it sorted you may want to consider making some safety guards.
Two bits of Perspex fixed to the fences.

Thanks guys for all the help. Working like the trooper it is. Tighten up the 2 bolts/nuts, and off she went
Yep will go ahead and make the perspex guard.
Wasn't looking to buy a morso again what with 1 new hip and another ordered, but the local auction house had this so here we are.
Yes she is older than me to my kids surprise.
Again thank you all
