Hi, can anyone recommend where to buy lengths of MDF frame in the normal oak, black and pine. I'm looking to use it for engraving as struggling with pine veneer frame. Can't seem to find any of the normal moulding suppliers who sell it.
Thanks
Steve

Re: MDF Frame
Almost all MDF picture frame mouldings are paper wrapped mouldings. I don't think that they would be at all satisfactory for engraving. You might have been success with Polycore moulding, but to be honest I suspect that a decent really dense material such as oak would make a lot more sense. Quite a lot of people are laser engraving of to Oak, because it produces a much better finished result. Perhaps this might be a much better way to go with this.

Re: MDF Frame
I have a CNC and wouldn’t touch mdf frames for engraving. The quality of the MDF inside is dire. Better off using hardwood or pine. If you use an adhesive coating before carving then the results would be ok.
Lasers are an option also. I have t explored the possibilities with picture frames but I use a laser to engrave my logo on the easels I make and I think there would be picture framing applications, not with mdf though, horrible fumes.

Re: MDF Frame
Thanks for the reply's, I've looked around and majority seem to be laser engraved on the typical mdf paper based photo frame.
Anyone know a supplier for these mouldings I've searched high and low online and cannot find any with the normal suppliers like DJ and Mainline.
Thanks in advance

I'm guessing that you'd have to deal direct with China, where these monstrosities come from..

Re: MDF Frame
I use oak for laser engraving successfully, then fill with resin.
These are some I am doing for (expensive!) Wedding Favours. This was the proof of concept for the customer - hence one of them is not central!
