Used Mount Cutter recomendations?

Post by gavinr »

I'm just starting out in framing and setting up a workshop, for years Ive had an old keencut ace thats ive only ever used as a guilotene for paper which I was intending to use for now but it seems i've always been missing the squaring arm for it and as the cutter was discontinued in the 90s Kenncut have no spares.

Can anyone recomend any slightly older mount cutters that I will be able to lean some basic techniques on so I can begin searching for a used one that will get me going, I only know keencut and no other makes so my searches at present are a bit limited.

Almost all older mountcutters are going to be a bit of a lottery. Eventually it will become uneconomic for mountcutters manufacturers to continue to provide spares support for older models. So then it comes down to how old an older mountcutter is and the mountcutters actual condition. Many of the cheaper, but not fully professional quality mountcutters are not much of a worthwhile purchase even when they are new, bacause they are not particularly good at what many of them are capable off. Older reconditioned mountcutters which are still supported for essential spare parts can be a good deal, if you know that these have been fully reconditioned back to a condition which is in all intents to the same working standard to a new mountcutter. I cannot pretend to know which suppliers are able to recondition older mountcutters to the best standards and as a result, I have to recommend that it is necessary to ask those who are able to supply reconditioned mountcutters some veryy carefully worded questions. I only know of one company which provides fully reconditioned mountcutters and this is Framers Equipment and I have personal experience of buying equipment from them, but I have no doubts that there will be others, so it will be worth asking around to find out who they all are.

I have a mixture of new, secondhand and reconditioned equipment in my workshop and for many of us, this may be a worthwhile way of purchasing what equipment we need at a really worthwhile overall cost. Not everything needs to be in absolutely as new condition, as not everything always needs to be perfect in every respect. Some items of equipment still function well, even with aceptable slight levels of wear and it's not impossible to buy spares to recondition a piece of equipment yourself as and when you have the time. Not all pieces of secondhand equipment have been used very much and a lightly used piece of equipment, is ofter of very little difference from and brand new version of the same thing at a much higher cost for the new item. We are not all made of money and have different available budgets, so take your time, ask questions, speak to members of the forum for advise and be careful to get good value for your money. I have a lot more secondhand equipment in my workshop than, I have equipment that is new and it has not limited my ability to produce top quality work. There is no actual necessity to have everything as new, Most equipment just needs to be in adequately good condition and working order.
