framing stained glass

Post by countrystudio »

Hello
A customer has bought a piece of lead stained glass (reclaimed / recycled) .
Apparently it is approx 450mm x 750mm and the glass is 6mm thick.
Any suggestions on how to frame it? I have not seen the glass but believe it will eventually be hung in a bathroom
Which moulding will be suitable or would aluminium frames be an option?
Regards
Heather

Hi Heather,

I did a couple of these 2 weeks ago, I used a solid oak frame with a deep rebate (available in Bristol to pick up). This was the customers choice, but any frame with a deepish rebate should be fine. The finished job looked excellent, and more importantly, the customer was happy.

If you want the details of frame and supplier details, let me know.

Cheers

Nick

I've done a couple of these from old doors that were being replaced. Just frame as normal no glass or backing and a wood beading strip stained and screwed on the back to hold it all in place, if I remember correctly I also had to fit a wide slip as the panels were surprisingly out of square.

How about dropping down to a local reclamation yard and look for an old sliding sash window frame and use that, or build a new one to size and distress it so that it looks old :)

if only one dimension is about correct then just neatly cut the sides and join.

It's nice to do these with no backing so they can be hung in front of a window. Just fix them in a frame with some narrow quadrant moulding and fix decorative chains to the top. Or put some feet on the frame so they can stand in a windowsill. 8)

Thank you to everyone for your kind suggestions.
I will discuss them with the client and take it from there.
