Help identifying moulding needed!

Post by Jo »

Hello everyone,

I have a customer who wants to match a frame bought from a photography studio about 3 years ago, and I don't recall ever seeing anything like it from the suppliers I use. I'm slightly confused because it looks and feels like an oak or oak veneer moulding, but the back is smooth and yellowish like a polymer moulding. Could anybody offer any suggestion of what it might be and where it comes from?

It is about 50mm wide, 46mm deep, and there is a 3mm step on the inside edge. The rebate must be about 36mm.

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light!

Is it all in one lump, or two mouldings? Seems like a hefty moulding. :P The finish looks a bit too even for real wood.

Chances are it's a readymade that the photographer sourced though a photography-type wholesaler. is it a 'standard' size?

It's definitely all one moulding, but yes, it's a 20"x24" standard size frame.

The customer knows I might not be able to match exactly, but at the moment I can't even match vaguely!

This looks close http://www.lionpic.co.uk/product/47mm-' ... 513,0.aspx there's also a matching spacer which could be adapted to give you the step.

I've got a sample of that Lion one, and it's not the right colour really, but it's the closest I've got so far. I use Lion, A&T and Arqadia mainly, and that's the closest I've found from the 3 of them. I like the idea of using the spacer for the step though, although to get a step and rebate it sounds like some fiddly cutting down!

Loxley Colour in Glasgow have that moulding made for them exclusively. This is our closest moulding, it's the same foil but smaller profile
