I'm making 26 lacquer frames, I need 9ft for each frame, the moulding is in 10ft lengths, nice easy job you would think ! not one length is perfect, dust and fibers in the lacquer,Im not getting one frame out of a length, my supplier is going to take some back,Its not their fault as its wrapped in the factory, my question is how much waste should i expect on a job like this.

Are you working out 9 ' from internal or external frame measurements?

External. The problem is there are so many speck of dust and fibers in the lacquer, Quality control in the factory !

If I ordered 10ft of a moulding I'd expect 10ft to be usable.

I think I would send the lot back and ask for some from a different batch. I usually allow a extra foot after getting the external measurements, it sounds like you got a really bad batch.

That's what I thought ! But I was wondering if I was expecting too much to get a frame from one length with only one foot waste, Surely in the factory's where the lacquer comes from they dress the same as the guy's that spray paint cars, or maby not, someone must have been wearing a fluffy jumper when this batch was done!

I have never had problems with lacquered mouldings. I would send it back. I always try and get the maximum yield out of a length even if it means cutting 3 shorts and 2 longs to get the most out of it. If there is that much wastage then I would stop and send it all back. If they are unable to send you decent lengths I would source a different moulding from a different supplier or if you can't then get them to give you a bloody good discount to allow for the unusable sections.

We use a lot of lacquer moulding, most often for sports shirts. Frequently we have issues with lacquer mouldings with bits on the wood before spraying, plus of course faulty wood that has been sprayed over. It is unusual for us to get a single length without a fault of this kind and sometimes we do return it for a credit, but we increase the wastage on lacquers to cater for this.

I had this problem some time back and got replacements sent which were as bad if not worse. The company concerned sent the rep to take a look and he said that it was pretty much as it comes and they would not credit or replace.

I have found Simons to be the best for laquers.
