fLAT HEAD vS PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS ANYONE ?

Post by Bagpuss »

Come on everyone, a quick straw poll...
Flat head screws or Phillips, what do you use ?

I use flat head but after 25 years of fastening D-rings on the back of frames I'm starting to ask myself why I don't use Phillips screws ...

Genuinely interested,

Do you mean slotted versus Phillips?

I've never used slotted, Phillips or posi for me. Do you use an electric screwdriver? Slotted isn't fun with an electric screwdriver and manual screwdrivers aren't fun.

Pozi for me.
When I have to undo someone else's slotted screw it's such a faff there is no way I would change.

If you use a power driver pozi heads are a must.

Slotted screws are better if they are visible. On frames this very rarely happens. Brass. All slots parallel.

This is what we use most of, these are a superb screw at an amazing price, the carriage is free if you spend a few quid ( last time I only spent £45) and next day delivery, http://m.screwfix.com/p/goldscrew-woods ... tered=true

Pozi as i use a makita drill to put them in with. The only flat head screw driver I have in the workshop is for opening tins of paint with. :giggle:

A Manchester screwdriver is one of these, Graysalchemy:

IFGL, aren't those Screwfix screws a bit on the long side for many frames - at 16mm?

My favourite are the Lion gold screws as they are a PZ2. Wessex sent me some silver-coloured screws (irritating when fixing brass fittings) that are a PZ1. Far harder to use than a PZ2.

Phillips, BTW, don't give as good a grip with the bit as does Pozidrive. And as others have said, slotted don't really work with electric screwdrivers.

16mm gold pozi's are my choice of screw but I will use 20mm on deeper frames especially if they are heavy, but I also have 13mm as well for shallower frames.

James that is a hammer not a screw driver and may I remind you that Manchester is the birthplace of the industrial revolution and engineering excellence and not forgetting the birthplace of the modern computer. I don't think the Lancaster Bomber or the Vulcan would have flown if Mancunian had used a hammer instead of a screw driver when building them.

No James the 16s are by far the most used for us, like Alistair we also have shorter and longer screws.

I get though 1000s of 3x12mm "Gold Screw" screws from Screwfix. They are very cheap and work fine. :D

As for bits, don't buy cheap ones. The Screwfix ones are total carp. One screw and they are knackered.

I suppose it depends deeply on what mouldings you use, I prefer a decent rebate depth, hence using the 16s most.

Alistair, that's an old joke. I was born and brought up in Manchester as was my father, who was an Engineer, and he referred to it thus... A quick Google, in fact, gives me:

Prospero, Screwfix I'm sure used to do roundhead screws in that size; I can only find countersunk ones at the moment.

I am so very sorry to hear this James, it must have been awful, especially with Yorkshire, the best place on earth just down the road,
I hope you made a full recovery.
