Ceiling Height
Hi all,
As a matter of interest, how many of you have 3m / 10ft ceiling height for storing mouldings.
My workshop varies from 2.1m/7ft to 2.4m/8ft.
I'm thinking of punching a hole in the roof!!

Ceiling Height
Hi Steve,
I have a sloping roof on my 'workshop' outhouses and once inside I can stack the mouldings (up to about 3.25 mtrs length) vertically. What I want to trade is a little bit more floor area to accomodate more equipment so if you have the latter you aren't doing bad.
Kind regards,
Dave

Our whole shop is 8ft or 2.4 of those metrical thingys.
Not much we can do in the shop and backrooms - there is another storey above. But not in the workshop - it's a false ceiling.
Something else I should have took time over when we moved in - there is a trapdoor in the workshop ceiling - never opened it - don't even know if the joists above - that the flourescent tubes must be fixed to, are wooden or metal.

I guess I am very fortunate. My shop was originally a carpet store. They could display rolls of carpet and vinyl goods vertically. The roof line is 15' (4.5m) between the steel trusses.
On the other hand none of you want to see my heating bill in the winter.

This converting to metric is gonna kill me, but …
My ceilings are only 2.4 meters, so, obviously a 3 meter rail of moulding doesn’t fit too well vertically.
I simply built a horizontal storage rack out of 2 x 4s (let’s see, 5 x 10 cm.) rough lumber. I don’t believe that this rack takes up any more real estate than vertical bins would, and there is enough space between each “shelf” so that mouldings are easily placed and removed.
I did, however, have to anchor the rack to the wall with some industrial strength bolts to keep it from toppling over.
So, when you’re presented with a lemon, make a Margarita.

my workshop is the back bar of a medieval pub - and at 5'4" tall I think the ceiling is quite high - Its not. I do have a cellar so I suppose I could cut a hole in the floor - but the cellar is haunted and i might upset the agreement we (me and the ghost) have, that I wont bother him - if he doesn't bother me.

My storage area is upstairs in a room that is 6' max to the rafters - no chance of the mouldings being upright, at 5'8" I still have to duck in some areas where the beams come down at an angle. Both ends have horizontal storage, but it's surprising how quickly that fills up with stock, but they are 8" apart, I could double the number of rack shelves and have them 4" apart. I do have a vertical space for offcuts <6' though.

I've got a resident presence here, too. Likes making people stumble on their way up to the gallery, and occasionally causes mischief in the workshop, especially when I have jobs in from the former owner of my business premises. I've nicknamed him Loki...
