Alternative solution for joining deep frames

A regular topic that comes up is how to join deep frames and strap clamps work very well.

I have recently been using Collins mitre spring clamps which work amazingly well. I made some deep coving in oak and joined with these (where a strap won't work).

They can also be used if making a Pentagon or hexagon frame. The mark left is negligible and can be lightly sanded.

I suspect most will still find straps more useful, but i was pleasantly surprised how well these work so thought i would share

I've seen these before but I was always concerned about the possibility of there being an indent left in the moulding. We mostly use factory finished stuff in here so unfortunately I don't think we could use them but I really like the idea. It looks to be a nice quick solution

As StevenG said, these can only be used for bare-wood mouldings.
I've been getting away with only using strap clamps but these would be very useful for some of the more odd shaped profiles.

Early on I was persuaded to buy a full set of Ulmia clamps:

It felt like a fortune at the time. I probably only use them once a year but they are brilliant. The Collins look totally up for the job for a lot less £££!

I use these a lot, obviously on bare wood mouldings, but really useful when doing small frames where strap clamps are a pain.

Well that's another set of clamps we're going to have to buy now!

For small frames at the moment, we find our Veritas 4 way speed clamps to be really useful.
