Cheapo Mountboard for "cutting on" ( on CMC )

I have been meaning to ask what Forum members (with CMCs) use to protect the surface of their machines when cutting their mounts? I use Colourmount board which I'm happy with but find myself reaching for a sheet of Conservation board when the mount I cut on is scored to b*ggery, I always kick myself, why would I use Conservation board ?? Well, I just don't carry Standard board you see

Can anyone suggest a suitable board that is 815mm x 1200mm at least ? Something "cheap" for cutting on ?

I ask any of my regular suppliers if they have any damaged boards for delivery with my next order or if I collect. Alternatively, I buy unfinished boards (retree?) when I run out of damaged boards.

Depending on what you call cheap, any mountboard is cheap compared to the surface of your cutter

I use Arqadia's 1250 micron smooth mounting board - 999114000 at 1.85 per sheet (packs of 50 sheets) Grey board is cheaper still at £1.10 and is thicker, but I've not tried that.

I use spectra, If you buy in bulk qties it is very reasonable.

I have always found my suppliers have some 2nds to sell cheap. Boards that have got scuffed in the warehouse or ones thay have bought up from their suppliers as imperfect.

I did hear that Arqadia have stopped disposing of their seconds this way as some have found their way on to the market being sold as perfect.

We use Arqadia pulp board, but we have a vacuum CMC. Its good and pretty cheap

999 102 000 and about £1.20 a sheet Have to buy in 50's though

I love resurrecting old postings

I thought I might try and use BACK/10 from Simons as the Slip Mat on my Gunnar, (2100 mic, white papered one side ), that way when it has served it's purpose and has too many cut marks (not deep ones ), I can then recycle it and use it as backing board , scratch marks have no effect on customers work and I always think it's a waste of mountboard as a slip mat.

I havn't tried it yet but assume I may need to recalibrate depth of cut, does anyone see a problem with using this board ?

yes its a harder product, so you might get some funky cuts

and when yoiu have cut a good few mounts, it wont just have scratches in it either

I think you might find backing board will blunt your blade quickly. Better off buying some cream core board, cheapest you can find IMHO.

I get some 2nds from a supplier and they last a fair while if you use both sides and rotate 180 deg after a while. Unless you cut a lot of large mounts most the wear is in one corner anyway.

I use both sides, go through 180, then cut in half and rejoin. It's always the bottom left hand corner that gets the wear, but then I'm from Yorkshire!

I use simons pulp board (60 x 40" for vacuum cmc) @ £6 per sheet , swapped 180 then flipped it's £1per day I can live with that . I tried a few others but just not worth the trouble.

Changing the bottom sheet should not alter your machine settings, the head comes down hits the board, then deployes the blade to the specified depth, bottom board thickness alters nothing.

Until another framer takes it apart (maybe a reglaze) and takes photos and post them on a forum somewhere

One of my suppliers sometimes has seconds (mountboard), I buy 50 at a time, use, flip 180, turn over, flip, cut down, takes ages to go through them, cheap as chips
