Unless there's a good reason, don't bump old threads, I for one rarely realise until I'm a fair few posts in, that the only post I have not read is the last one.

Just start a new thread and put a link to the old one maybe?

I'd prefer to have folk reopening an old topic than not posting on the forum at all.

If a member has something to add to a thread what better place is there than on the topic itself?

Starting a new thread is posting, I'm not trying to discourage posting.

Surely it keeps it all in one place and you can see it is something you have already read and not be fooled into thinking it is something new. If that happened on a forum I moderate on then I would be tempted to combine the new thread with the old thread, for house keeping.

Well, of course, it wouldn't, as it would be all over within half a dozen posts and would never require restarting. But then... there wouldn't be a forum as all forums do (mostly) is go round in circles...

I wasn't on about re-starting threads but combining threads as per ....

So one day someone starts a morso chipping thread - it goes to about 8 replies and a mod steps in and combines it with the last thread, 3 days later someone else starts a morso-chipping thread, it goes 5 posts before a mod steps in and combines it with the those last two combined ones and so on and so on.

Is it coz I is Welsh?

Personally I don't mind someone resurrecting an old thread.
To see what's current I check out new posts, so I started reading about a plate someone had framed; not sure if that is the one that prompted this.
As I was reading it it started to ring a bell, but I read on anyway as good to refresh my memory.
Personally I wouldn't resurrect a thread like that just to say well done, but I assume the person that did probably searched for plate framing or was looking through previous examples and commented without realising the date.

Daft question Robo, but you do realise that if you click on the little orange square to the left of the thread title, that it takes you directly to the latest unread post? That way, you're not having to plough through all the previously read comments

Failing that, you could just look at the date under the thread title, and it will give you an idea of how old the thread is

I reckon I'm fairly familiar with forum functions; sometimes I do both of those things and sometimes I don't - depends how busy the forum is and how busy I am.

I don't see what is wrong with bumping threads as long as the new post has something relevant and new to add to the discussion.
