Advice on drymounting please

Post by grahamdown »

Hi,

I'm about to buy a second hand Hotpress HGP220 and this will be my first venture into drymounting.

I would appreciate and advice, suggestions, ideas or how-to's etc on how to get the best out of it and things I can do and cant do with it.

one thing I have in a draw waiting to be framed is an old OS map which is tatty (bit missing ) and creased - would this be a suitable subject for the Hotpress please?

Regards,

Graham

Wessex Pictures run courses in using the Hot Press, as they supply the materials, and Steve Goodall who runs the course is a forum member, what he dosen't know about drymounting is not worth knowing

Hi Graham,
I've just been loaned "The Mounting and Laminating Handbook 2nd edition" by Chris A. Paschke, which I was told was the go to book.
I have just done the course with Steve Goodall at Hotpress/Drytac in Bristol. It was a very worthwhile day, a bit premature for me as I don't yet have either.
I'll be going for the Drytac laminator myself, as I prefer the no heat method.
The next course is on the 3rd July, Steve's contact is stevg at wessex pictures dot com

Getting some hands-on training is the ideal thing. There are lots of pitfalls and lots of sneaky tricks you can learn.

One thing I would advise is don't learn using a customer's work. :o

Good training on subjects like this is money well spent and will helps to develop a good level of confidence. When you get your equipment and materials, make up some demo pieces your self, so that you not only have some examples to show your customers, but you have also put yourself, the equipment and the materials to the test, so you are competent and confident to take on the work.

While you are trying everything out is a good time to figure out the cost of time and materials. This will help you to work out how you are going to price your dry mounting to your customers.

never a truer word spoken. I have made some expensive cock-ups on customers work that have cost serious money to rectify. Pitfalls are numerous and I would whole heartedly recommend the course route. Its worth the petrol money, even if it saves one customer cock-up.

On a positive side we have made some amazing transformations to work that was otherwise unframeable so we did love it - really

I always had my heart in my mouth when drymounting though
