Framing a death mask

Hi all

Ok, not quite a death mask but pretty much. I have a bowie plaster mask to frame, like the one pictured below. The wire fixing that was in the back of the mask to hang it from isn't there so there's nothing to fix to.

Thoughts please on how to mount? I don't have a cmc so can't cut any fancy mount the same shape as the mask profile.

Maybe you might have a look at a Plastazote sheet of black foam. This stuff is used for tool boxes where cut outs for various sized tools are cut into the foam a the tools are press into their dedicted cut outs. It's already a material, which is already used from framing items for display in museums and the like. You can get it from companies like "conservation by design", or even some packing supplies companies. It's great stuff!

They are very heavy, I frame 3 of these 'Life Masks' in one frame, as birthday present for one of my customers for another of my customers, who then a year later brought in another to be framed to gobwith the other 3

They are made from plaster, ask your customer if they mind you drill yhe back and glueing some wire mounts, as these heads are supposed to have them, so could be argued you are not adding something that is not supposed to be there

Steve they look amazing. The ends of the wire are still sticking out so could potentially connect something but I'm too chicken to drill even if they say it's OK!

How did you secure them? Is that black foam? They look FAB

The Masks that I did had wire lops at the back, these were secured through the backing, which was black suede, in a coved shape, with thicker card behind for strength
