Keencut futura

Post by Justanotherpassword »

Hiya I have a keencut futura and struggling to remove overcuts on start of cut. Even on maximum dial out adjustment it still overcuts. Any ideas.

We'll need a bit more information and probably photographs to help too.
Are you getting an overcut on all 4 corners, both orientations?
So 8 overcuts in all?
What thickness mountboard are you using?
Are the blades correct and sharp?
Are you using a board underneath to cut onto?

No overcuts just on start of cut. Like I say dialled out maximum, still overcuts, yes using slip mount, brand new blades.

Have you tried reducing the amount of blade comming out of the blade holder and then recalibrating all the stops

I have/had this issue, are you using Tech S 12 blades? Does the spring in the adjuster become coil bound, what thickness board are you cutting?

Tried both tech 12 and 15. Think thickness is 1.2mm, sorry not sure what you mean by coil bound? Can you elaborate

Again a photo will probably help.

How big is the overcut?
Is it improving at all if you make an adjustment?
Has it ever been correct?

You run out of fine adjustment because the spring is totally compressed

Yes I'm on total adjustment, spring totally compressed and still get a large overcut on start of cut

Are you definitely using the single end S blades? It is essential that the blade only just cuts through the mount into the slip, backing off the blade reduces the sweep and the overcut and reduces hooking

Yes I am. To be clear I've been framing for 15 years so I am experienced. I only had the futura for a few weeks, had ulimat before and never had this problem.

The adjustable stop is dialled to the amount of error and then reset to to what's required - eg you want 75mm but the cut starts 73mm away from the edge of the board. Dial the cursor 2mm (forward I think) then reset the stop (move it back) to the 75mm you want. All you're doing is moving the cursor dial to what it's actually cutting to (73mm) and then moving the whole stop back so the cursor reads what it should be

If you've somehow run out of adjustment, which is odd, then check the scale is fully home in its housing and if it is, then the only thing I can think of is to adjust as per the older machines - move the scale to the stop instead of vice-versa. The old scale could slide in its channel, all being well this is still the case, or it can be adjusted in its housing, otherwise you'd have to unstick it and re-stick it. If you have to resort to this, dial the stop to half way first so you can adjust as per the manual ... in the futura :-) Also, mark a point, say 80mm, so you can reset the scale 5mm or whatever away from it.

Download the manual here if you don't have one ..

Make sure your thumb holds the stop/head still while you enter the blade, release thumb but make sure your hand holds the head still if you let the head move forward on blade entry you will always have a problem even if the stops are correctly adjusted.
Alway best to calibrate the stops with a manual cut mount with drawn lines. So you can see the entry point of blade 3mm before cross and 3mm after cross. When you practice this and get it correct without stops then you can set the stops to your manual entry and exit points.
