Moulding ID please

Post by WannabeFramer »

I've been asked if I can match this and have gone through Larson, Lion, DJ Simons, Wessex and Welsh Framing catalogues with no joy.

Does anyone recognise it at all please? Or suggest something close?

Never seen it, have you tried Ashworth and Thompson?

Ooh, I hadn't heard of them! Just had a good look through their website though. Still nothing.

The lady brought in 2 prints from a charity shop - one framed, one mounted and wondered if I could match the frame to make a pair. Not so it seems, unless she has them both done.

Then I suspect it is a long gone discoed moulding. Frinton closed down a few years ago. Wessex still have some of their remaining stock in their clearance section on their website, that would be the last chance I would think.

And time spent that you will never recover! Best practice imo is to redo both ensuring that everything is up to your standards.

Having wasted so much time trying to find matching mouldings in the past, I will not entertain trying to match anything that doesn't come from one of my regular suppliers.

My approach is to explain to customers that

a) mouldings are fashion items - try matching 1990s style clothes in the High St today
b) even if I manage to find a company making the same pattern it won't look the same side by side
c) it will end up costing you a lot lot more if I have to try and source something from a supplier I don't get a trade discount from
d) I can offer you over 1500 different options from my display, so play the game, and choose from one of those!

 I have just noticed a framed piccy on my wall that has that exact moulding. It is definitely a Frinton one
from the mid '90s. It's a Ramin-based moulding of which there were a few variants.

Wow Prospero! Nothing available in the Frinton section of Wessex so it’s back to the customer for a chat now.
