Could you frame this?

Hi have been asked to quote to frame this print which is 2100mmx700mm, this is the image from the artist studio in South Africa with it framed in a double window mount. The customer knows it will not be cheap and has asked for ArtGlass.

I have never framed a window mount and glass frame this size before and not sure I can do it? The print is currently in a tube so will need to be mounted. I think it’s an inkjet on quality paper, he said he paid £2.5k for it from this well known SA artist, so I don’t want to cold mount it.
But I cannot cut a window mount this large and if I could can you get mount board this size 2200mm?
The cost for the glass alone 3mm (due to size) AR70 with my discount is coming in about £350 + vat cut to size, I would not cut this size myself at this cost, and if if I did damage the glass it’s a big loss.

I don’t like turning work down but I’m not sure I can do it, would you? and it so how?

I thinking the only way would be to float mount onto a spliced board and only use acrylic and offer standard or no reflective if he has the money. I just don’t want the risk of breaking large art glass. I guess I could also place a sheet of mdf as a backing board on the frame to reduce bowing?

It’s certainly possible to do.

My advice would be that if you’re concerned and not entirely comfortable taking on this job then you’re best to pass it on to another framer with more experience.

I think you are right Jo, as much as I don’t want to pass on work, I also do not want it to be a very stressful experience if things don’t work out. I’m experienced enough now to know that this will not be a simple job.
Out of interest could you cut a window mount this size?

Can you recommend anyone in my area, the customer lives in Farnham?

Have you tried Wessex Fine Art? They cut very large mounts and deliver nationwide on the Wessex vans. Not sure how big they go?

A painted wooden slip could be an alternative to a mount? This sort of thing... Would also provide some extra bulk and support for the artglass. A subframe would also be a definite for something that big.

I'm quite excited by this job! I did a large piece like this last year. It was time consuming as you'd expect but a fantastic learning opportunity. It required a few extra tools, like a print de-roller to flatten the print. My biggest tip handling this size of glass was to bring the frame to the upright glass to insert it into the frame instead of lifting the glass and trying to lay it flat into the frame. It was a revelation at the time!
Being organised by having all of the component cut ready and tested for fit. The most important consideration is whether you have adequate space for all of the processes, like cutting and joining the frame and fitting it together.
Purely as an exercise, whether you decide to take on the job or not, I'd say it's worth spending the time working it all out and pricing the job up fully (and adding on at least an hour of labour for the inevitable extra time it takes you). You should be pleasantly surprised by how much income a piece like this can generate.
If you feel completely out of your depth then by all means pass it on to another framer, but if it's because you haven't done anything of this size before, then I'd first consider if this is something that you would like to do more of in the future and if so "if not now when?"

If I need a mount for a picture that's larger than 1200 x 1200 I use Centrado 2651WH instead of a mount, and then add an outer frame.

This one is around 1.5m x 1m so bigger than it looks.

So did you just frame the print in the centrado 2651WH loose or was it dry mounted first?
Thanks

This information is really helpful, thank you. I didn’t think of using a slip, what a great idea.
I have given a quote to the customer with a hefty price tag if I’m going to take it on and also suggested he shops around and get a quote from other frames on the Fine Art Trade Guild website.
I have another to quote for large one, but this is a more manageable 1270x 870 which I can handle.
