Nothing unusual … an old New England tradition. Over here they teach framers to cut mounts with a chain saw.

actually we keep one handy for cutting down over-long moulding bundles, we dont cut mounts with it any more - honest.

Looks to me like the mount was cut with broken bottle, (probably after drinking the contents of the bottle!)

I've found a much better alternative for hinging. It's cheap and must be the next best thing to conservation hinging.

It doesn't say it's acid free but it is clean peel and UV resistant. It says it protects and, should you spill your coffe it's OK as it's waterproof. What else could you want? Oh yes, and as it's bright orange it's easy to find in a cluttered workshop.

The worst hinges I ever saw were made by Elastoplast. Might not have been acid free, but at least they were sterile.
