Customer has now collected the 'chess board' and seemed happy with the result! Phew!!
In the end I created an 'inner' framework out of slips to sit in the back of the main frame. I was hoping to simply screw this into the moulding but the depth of the rebate on the moulding she chose wouldn't allow this once the 'package' was in situ. This meant reversion to 'Plan B', less pleasing on the eye, but solid enough, i.e. taking a few scraps of a simple black moulding, screwing these into the main frame and then screwing my inner frame to them at the sides (single pin top and bottom) - are you following this....?
This allowed the D-rings to be attached out of the way for its use as a game board, and a few bits of sticky-backed felt finished it off.
And finally, here it is ready for the Grand Masters....
Sorry! when I previewed the post the pictures were there I promise! And also when I then went back into the post!
Unfortunately, all those little connections in my brain that would allow me to try this again tonight are coming up against a rather pleasant Rioja - I'll try again tomorrow!

While it is possible to refer to an image that is hosted elsewhere, within your post (by using the [img] [/img] tags), it is preferable to attach your pictures by uploading to the forum. That way they will always be visible within your post, and will be independant of internet problems that can sometimes prevent external links from working.
Many thanks for your kind comments John and Robo - I feel humbled!
I must admit I did try and stretch the cord quite tightly at the back, thinking that if it was loose the 'D' of the D rings may impinge upon the surface the frame was placed upon in the 'board' position. However, once hung in the 'wall' position the cord was inevitably loosening a little anyway.
But this is a good point - I can remember using a framer in Cheshire whose cord and knots at the back of his framed pictures were so taut they were almost impossible to hang! Obviously yearning for the days of his scouthood!
btw Thanks John for the info on inserting pictures, which was (obviously) a bit of a mystery to me - I kept getting error messages telling me a picture could only be 400 pixels high etc. Had the message read 'get high with 400 pixies' and your picture will appear like magic it would probably have made more sense to me!

I used to pride myself on just HOW tight I could get my cord - had it off to a fine art. Then I went bragging on The Grumble and they put me straight!
Plus I moved from cord to super softstrand (stainless steel coated) wire and things like 'wallbuddies'
