Float Mounting A Deckle Edged Photo
I'm trying to float mount a black and white photograph printed on deckle-edged paper. Normally I hinge a float mount at the top, but if I do that I'll either crush the deckle or the hinge will show. And to make it a bit more complicated the photo will be floated on a black mount, surrounded by a close fitting window mount, so it needs to be precisely located.
I'm fairly new to framing but I hope to learn from the more experienced framers on this forum who I hope have tackled this problem before. Thank you.

You need more than hinges at the top if you want to show the edges of something, you need them on all 4 sides to stop it from falling forwards.
Pass-through - or 'S' hinges just in from the sides will do the trick.

100% archival ?

If that's a reply to my reply ........etched wrote:100% archival ?
The prints in the photo were mounted as I (basically) described, with handmade hand-torn Japanese (pure kozo) hinges and freshly cooked wheat starch paste.
Spaced from the (museum) glass with econospace.
So, no, not 100% archival at all - not even close to as archival as putting them in a window-less vacuum

Re: Float Mounting A Deckle Edged Photo
Many thanks for the replies. So it looks like the main support will be pass-through hinges. I've done these before so I'm okay with the general principles, but I'd appreciate any advice about getting precise location of the photo with pass-through hinges within a close fitting window mount.
Thanks.
Thanks.

OK - say your glass size is 20x16"
Float mount your artwork to a board 22x18" - as central as you can; then fix your window mount in place and trim the excess off the mounting board.
The mounting board could even be smaller than 20x16" and you could make the difference flush with offcuts.
