Viewing figures

Post by Roboframer »

Viewing figures are grossly inaccurate!

It seems that, at time of posting this, that my, as yet unanswered topic 'How Fast?' has received 210 views.

When I looked a few minutes ago it was on 180, on some other forums, if the same member looks more than once, the count does not increase - when I went flicked back and forth between the topic and 'general Discussion' (to see if the same applied here) the amount of views increased 4 or 5 times each time! It's NOT others looking because I refreshed the 'General Discussion' page several times and the amount of views remained the same.

Seems each time one member reads a post the views increase by up to 5 times! Try it!

Wot's goin' on?

(Edit - this topic seemed to have 2 views the instant I posted it)

(Another edit - and after that edit - 7 views - in seconds)

John I have noticed this behaviour from time to time, and have always put it down to search engine spiders and other bots.

When this activity is taking place, the opening page may show the number of guests as perhaps one or two while at the same time the administrator's control panel will indicate 30 or 40 users - all with the same IP address!

In the early days I thought that we were under attack, but it appears that these events are benign (and not common).

It could well be that upgrading the forum software would cure this, something that I have been putting off as it is such an almighty pain in the tits.

Maybe I'll have a go after Christmas when things are a little quiter.

Hi John (times two)

Surely the Forum is about the content of the topic/thread and the exchange of information, help and advice.
Rather than the count of the number of times a posting has been read.

Roboframer, I have read your 'How Fast' topic and I am not quite sure of the point you are trying to make. Maybe if you wanted a reply you should have posted it on the 'Guiness Book of Records' Forum - if there is such a beast.

John -EstLite. I am happy with the format as it is. Viewing figures are for auditors and people with nothing else to do.

What ARE you gibbering about? Of course the forum is about ...... and not ....... who said otherwise?

Nor did I say I was unhappy with any format, but thanks for reminding me I have better things to do than make casual observations.

Goodbye!
