Another new farmer .........

Post by ceebdub »

Hi
I meant framer....
I am just starting out a little venture for myself, partner and some local artists. I have bought a Keencut mount cutter(lovely)
I am a joiner/silversmith/photographer by trade. I realise that decent kit is the key. I had a hand held logan mountcutter , I clamped a metal rule on a table and started and stopped manually. It took ages, now with the right machine cutting is a joy. I am still using off the shelf Neilson frames, but as soon as the right ebay deal comes along I will get an underpinner and Morso. This image is a painting that has two window mounts, set back in the rebate by 10 mm.( I was tring to be as complicated as possible for my first go. I havent any particular queries, but have read most posts on the site over the last few months. It is a fabulous resource and everyone who is involved should be proud of themselves.

Brenton

I dont know if I am allowed to put a link to my photography site
but it is http://www.brentonwest.co.uk if anyone is interested.

Welcome to the forum Brenton

The Keencut was invented by a friend of mine - Robin Lockwood.
Back 1985 he gave me some good advice if you are travelling.
Every day set aside £20 - call it buggeration money !
Then at the end of the day - think what you have spent on irritating things like
buying a sandwich which you dont enjoy, leaving a half drunk cup cup of coffee because you're in a rush. etc etc
Add up the buggeration money you have lost - subtract from £20
Think upon the difference as a profit for the day
Great advice - use it often.

I have visited distributors and framers in over 100 countries - no two are the same.

Brenton,
Welcome. Your photography is very interesting. I've not seen anything like it before. I would probably make a good subject for your "fat people" section.

Can I offer you a small tip in relation to your mat/mount widths?
Width of mat is best to be noticeably wider (or narrower than the frame). In your picture the white mat is almost the same width as the frame and then the black mat is slightly wider than the black.
The effect this has is that the subconscious mind of the viewer is a little confused so it doesn't know whether to look at the frame or the white mat or the black mat and those elements hold attention and it's very difficult to direct the eyes to the image inside.

If the white mat was around double its existing width, then the black one was much narrower than it is, the viewer's attention would be directed to the image inside.

Thank you for the feedback, I will try what you suggest. I found the mats looked a little awkward, but my untrained eye couldn't see why.
Any other comments always happily received.

Welcome ceebdub. :D

When I first looked at the clown frame I thought exactly what Ormond said about mount proportions. Yet it does seem to work in this case. Which just goes to show that it's not always wise to stick to the 'rules'.

Welcome to the forum

That's an impressive first attempt at framing! Well Done

I agree with Ormond, Cut a new white mount, leaving 7-10mm of the existing black mount visible, and that presentation will be much improved.

As for rules, they are there for a reason. (To be broken by people who have first of all understood the rules).

I couldnt agree more. I wil learn the rules slowly...then I WILL break them, as I have done with everything in life.
Thanks for the advice. I have to frame up 3 bent canvasses ( the ones you buy on card), then I will re try the mount on
old Pierrot. I will post a pic if I get it done today. Thanks again all.
