As someone new to this game i have a couple of items to frame. The first is a piece of fine lacework which i would like to float mount on a black background and wanted to know if i sandwich the lace with a piece of Melinex between the undermount then the window mount would this work. (image below)

The 2nd are two double sided medieval illuminations which again i would like to float mount so could i sandwich these between to pieces of Melinex with window mounts on both sides so that both sides of the illumination can be view by turning the frame around. The current mounts in the pictures below is how i received them and not examples of my mount cutting

Lastly, looking on the PEL web site the 75 micron 500mm x20M roll seems to be a reasonable price at £15 - would this be OK?

Encapsulation is a good solution for the manuscripts, but not so much for the lace.
The double-sided tape that sticks the two sides of the melinex together should be between 3 and 5mm away from the artwork and coverd by the mount aperture, with such an irregular shape that would not be easy to achieve. I'm not sure it would prevent it from folding under its own weight either.
I'd support stitch it with the same colour thread, same type even.
If you're thinking of encapsulating it then the double sided tape that holds the 2 pieces of melinex together should be JUST under the mount aperture. It's a method mainly for documents etc.
The thing probably isn't a perfect circle, so your mount would emphasise that and also be too far away in places, also you can't lay double sided tape in a circle. I'd stitch it.
As for 50 micron, I doubt it, I don't go lower than 75 for anything, but it would probably be fine for things like cigarette cards and for straps to secure small/light objects.
Here's the basic principles, courtesy of Jim Miller - I recommend you buy his books.
"A clear film encapsulation or overlay mount holds a document in three ways:
1. The film imposes slight pressure in the center of the mount if the convex side is against the item.
2. Static charge of the plastic film tends to hold the item in place.
3. Pinching action is created by having good-quality double-sided tape within 1/4" of the item's edges."
