A coat of Ronseal should fix it. Looks great on my stairs.

They're whinging about the colours being too vibrant after 500 years?
Well, leave it as it is or add a varnish or something that dulls the colours .... and then, once happy GLAZE IT! It'll never need restoring again - well, just a routine check every century I suppose.

Not clear if the photo with the article is of the cleaned painting. If it is, the mistake would seem to me to be the use of an age patinated frame alongside an as-new presentation of the painting.
