Old Lion Bench End Guillotine problems

Post by traighbum »

Does any forum member, have one of the older style, black handled, Lion bench end guillotines ?
I have inherited one and the cable recently broke.
Lion could not supply a replacement, but I managed to source something similar elsewhere.
My problem, concerns the locking of the lower end of the cable , in the foot operated clamp.
The cable appears to be locked via a locking screw located inside the RHS pedal portion of the clamp.
It appears almost impossible, to lock the cable in such a way that the friction on the screw is greater that the return spring pressure.
Most grateful for any thoughts or input.

Hi Colin

We never sold that particular model but was thinking it might help to post a photo when you get chance, I'm sure someone will know the answer or another 'work around' solution!

Hello Sam,
Thanks for your response.
I will try and post an image to see if it jogs someone's memory, there must be a lot of these still in use out there.

Image attached of the offending item. Outer cable has been removed for clarity.
Has anyone had to replace the inner cable on one of these Guillotines?

Try this lot - years ago I used to get bowden cables made for vintage cars and they seem to have taken over where bowden left off. They seem to be able to make anything.

Thanks for that, it may well help with sourcing a new cable/cables.
Would still welcome some input on the clamping off, inside the foor pedal

Took another look at your photo - maybe a blow lamp and a blob of solder would have the desired locking effect - could always be reversed by the same method.
