I was at the dentist at the time. Apparently he got masked up in our drive.

We've spoken to staff, including the manager, and some customers present and he wasn't going for the PO at all, he walked straight past that - just a totally enclosed kiosk, and went straight for the open shop counter. There's three tills there; only one was manned.

He pointed his pistol at the assistant and operated the slide several times - this - in hindsight - which is a wonderful thing, proved the weapon was a replica and that he knew diddly about guns. If you do that with a real handgun, it will eject a round each time, so even if it was a real gun, it had an empty magazine. It was a case of "Look, it has moving parts, so it's real RIGHT"!!

Just fire a round in to the ceiling/wall - that'll leave no doubt!

Then he produced a bag and told the assistant to empty the till contents in to it. The assistant said she couldn't - he'd have to buy something first (words to the effect at least - IOW the till has no 'No Sale' button - something has to be scanned and then an amount of money paid/card/whatever entered)

He grabbed a bar of chocolate - she scanned it; made the till open. While this was going on another female assistant locked the shop door so's he couldn't escape (easily).

Then he said to empty the contents of the other two tills in to his bag, assistant said she couldn't - it's not possible to log in to more than one till - she'd have to call someone. He legged it, with much much less money than the jail sentence will (hopefully) be worth.

But it seems he legged it via threatening, with his "gun" the woman that had locked the door - to unlock it and she (no spring chicken) is totally traumatised, as are quite a few others that witnessed this stuff.

I think this is the first daylight, violent (let alone 'armed') robbery this village has ever seen - break-ins, yes, plenty, including us!

A customer left our shop and then came straight back in and said "Call the police, a hooded bloke wearing a gas mask has just gone in to the Co-op" Our assistant did that, and got the Spanish inquisition!

"I don't know - someone just said ring the police because .........." etc etc.

So - IOW - probably about the same time as the PO assistant pressed her panic button, which links to the police ...we're dialling 999.

Ten minutes after the guy had legged it, so, at least 15 mins after our call and the PO panic button, a cop car turns up with one cop in it. He casually ambles in to the co-op.

About 5 mins later it seems like every copper in Sussex is here.

The nearest nick is Littlehampton; so's my nearest petrol station; I can get there, fill up and return in 20 mins, easy.

The weekend we moved to where we are living now the local shop/post office got ram raided. I wondered what sort of a place we had moved to.

They had an in store cashpoint machine but got rid off it after this.

Years ago when I worked in central London there was an armed robbery just up the road with firearms dishcharged.
