Staplers - Is there any particular to buy?

Post by datasafe »

I just discovered my stapler is the one I use for tracing CAT5 cable to walls! I've no idea where my standard stapler is :(

So, to my question.

I'd like to buy a stapler for framing. Is a standard B&Q stapler okay or should I look for something different, maybe better for framing?

I guess I'd prefer an electric stapler as my partner Angie will be using it mostly and some do require a larger hand and a bit of strength.

Anyadvice, links appreciated.

Cheers

i have a air driven axminster one

one of the white range. it was like 40 quid or something and rocks

bought a bosch rechargable one, great for wondering around with but sucks at stapling, as it is sloooooow from pulling trigger to firing the staple

have a cheap tacwise electric one, its great, cheap and chearful

bought it from one of the diy places

Thanks for the reply.

I have a compressor BUT, i'm not sure I like the idea of working just at one location and don't want to haul the compressor around! I like the idea of the rechargable most of all but you might have just put me off. Manual is okay for me but I know Angie would struggle with it - I have one somewhere. Electric might be my best option.

One question - what length staples do you use?

Cheers

I don't have a pneumatic stapler but I do have a pneumatic point gun which hangs above one corner of a 12x6 ft bench on a coiled air hose, it'll reach any part of the bench easily.... and beyond.

What do you use the stapler for?

I use an Omer staple gun, compressor powered. Model 3G.16H. Takes from 4mm to 16mm staples. For canvas stretching I use 1/4" (10mm) stainless steel staples. This is a wonderful tool to use. Well made. It'll work at a max of 7 bars (100/psi) I only fire mine on 50/psi. with 10mm staples.

We have a Draper electric staple gun but is rarely used as it is prone to jamming. We have reverted to the Rapesco manual gun for vanvas stretching.

Pneumatic is really the way to go.

For low volumes I find this one very good.

Omer point guns and staplers are the DD's but expensive however they will last a long time, I have had one for about 5-6 yrs were as cheap pneumatic staplers lasted about 12 months before they blew a gasket.

I've always used a hand stapler and find it does everything I want it to. Air powered ones are probably less tiring to use if you are banging away all day. But having said that, they are heavier - even on a balancer and you do have to wrestle with the hose. And they aren't exactly portable. If you are only using staples <10mm I would get a manual one.

The Omers are lighter than most and well balanced.

Firstly and most importantly, thanks to all who responded, it's made interesting reading.

So, what did I buy?

Being an impatient and impulsive person I went out and bought a Ryobi® ONE+™ P300 18V Stapler - http://www.ryobitools.com/catalog/power ... tools/P300 I already had the rechargeable LiON battery.

I used it for the first time last night fixing a printed canvas to 16" stretcher bars. TBH it felt a little heavier than I'd like but otherwise worked really well and was reasonably responsive.

Now all I have to do is master the 'art' of folding in the corners! I looked on Youtube and got a reasonable idea but none showed the actual process in any detail. If you have a link that might help, youtube, website or document, please let me know.

Many thanks

I posted this 'how to' recently but can't easily find the thread it was in. It's my fave canvas stretching vid!
