Information on J.H. Orton (Artist)

Post by Not your average framer »

I've acquired a pair of nice oil paintings on canvas by J.H. Orton. I would guess that these paintings were from the first half of the 20th century.

Unfortunately I am not finding it easy to find any information about this artist. So I'm wondered if anyone might know anything about this artist.

Thanks in anticipation,
Mark

Hi Ian,

Oh dear! My mind must be going. I did not remember previously asking the question at all.

They've been cleaned, restored and partly reframed now, as I've retained the original liners, but added new frames. I'm just not sure whether to sell them in my shop, (which usually takes ages) or to pop them into my favourite auction house.

Having got a nice pair in identical size frames, usually helps the prices at auction, but who knows!

Hi Mark,

From Artnet, the search orton bring up this:

- Luke Orton Lindoe (Canadian, 1913)

- Donalie K. Orton

- Ken Orton

- J.R. Orton (British)

J R orton appears from other databases to be 19th century, A painting titled "A Pensive Thought" sold for $550. Can't find anything else unfortunately.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll probably give them a go in my usual auction house and see what happens.

If you could post photo's. might be able to recommend a different auction house. I fire paintings round to different auction houses as I know some styles sell better. I am also helping furnish a couple of big houses for customers including furniture and paintings, so may be able to find a buyer.

Although I frame 95% of the normal working week, much of the other time is spent on antiques bits, as that is sill lucrative.

Cheers
