Hoffman dovetail routing

Post by traighbum »

I did a bit of a search on the Hoffman Routing machine and saw a few posts from about a year ago.
Is anyone still using this system to glue/wedge hardwood frames?
I would be very interested to hear some comments on the machine, ease of use, cost etc

I use the Hoffmann for all of my wood mitres. I found that the underpinner that I got with the purchase of our business was not only totally useless for hardwoods but also for deep mouldings. Using the Hoffmann takes more time but gives a joint that I can trust. I have the bench top non-pneumatic MU2 which with VAT was about £2000. It works well but the German engineering does not go as far as a sensible method of adjusting the cutter depth. To adjust the cutter depth you loosen the clamp for the electric motor then some how manually move the motor by a fraction of a millimetre then you pray that when you tighten the clamp it remains at your target position. Remember the adjustment of contact breakers on car ignition systems?

In case you do buy one and in case they still have not got their user manual complete - bear this in mind - the cutter is removed by undoing the collet nut then this nut goes loose but continue turning the nut for it to eject the cutter.
