Strap clamp and Studio Joiner

Post by ChrisBishop »

I'm not sure how to "underpin" the corner of a frame in a strap clamp that has the handle? It's all very fiddly, and I often knock it out of alignment. I was led to believe the strap clamp is better than the supplied clamp

Hi Chris.

What sort of pinner are you using?

The only time I use a strap clamp is on very big frames. Easier to glue up and align all the corners in the clamp prior to pinning. But the clamps I use are just webbing that feeds into a little metal carriage that has a ratchet mechanism. You cinch it up with a spanner. No corners or sticking-out handles. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be made any more, which is a shame as they are very handy. The nearest thing you can buy are tie-downs for car roof-racks/trailers. They are not much use on small mouldings though.

It's the basic Logan Studio Joiner. It comes with a clamp that holds one corner at a time, but I prefer a strap clamp as it holds the frame together in one go. The strap clamp I have has a handle with adjustable thread to tighten the strap. (FrameCo - now Australia only but was UK as well)
