Throwing this out in an effort to assist a friend in the UK who owns this small (4x6 inch) pastel on board. It probably dates to 1930-40's but could be a little older. The friend acquired it from her mother in the Czech Repulic and the artist was perhaps German. It appears to be in the "Ernest Munch style" or influence.
Any help would be appreciated... Thanks in advance.
Regards,
John
P.S. Showed this to a couple of people while at the Spring Fair this past week with no results.

I like this pastel very much, I thought it had influences of Edvard Munch,
Defiantly looks German or east European, I will show it to some people who may know more. My gut feeling is it is a little older 1920 to 1930.
Edvard Munch was a Norwegian.
Although of course he could have influenced this painting, remember Munch was associated with Symbolism, but also Fauvism. Fauvists are famous for their bold use of colours.
I wish you luck on your search!
I would agree with IFGL, it looks to be 1920's ish. I have been dealing in antique art for 10 years, so still a newbie at it really. I looks well painted but I reckon it is more than likely going to be a good amateur and be hard to identify the artist.
I like a challenge so will go through the art databases I subscribe to and will get a few more experienced experts I know to see if they can shed some light.
From what I can see I get the impression that it's a quite accomplished artist but not A-list. By the look of the paper I'd hazard a guess at early 20c. Probably a preliminary doodle for a larger work.
