GOLD LEAF

Post by framebyframe »

Does anyone have the trade names for the products used in gold leafing and ageing ..... We can get gold leaf here in SA, but also need the ageing "varnish" and the other product which you apply in a cloth, it's not liquid. If I knew what to call them i could search for a supplier here ....

I have never used a "prepackaged" toner for aging gold. If you read up on historical methods, they are still being used.

Shellac - assorted grades, colors
powered pigments
regular artist paints - casein, gauche, oil, tempra
asphaltium
rotten stone
waxes
elbow grease

Suggest you contact Joe Vermaak at the South African Picture Framing Academy in Muldersdrift, Gauteng. Between him and Mick Formato of Supreme, they should be able to help you.

Good luck
