Which undermount

Post by pramsay13 »

I'm looking for a new conservation grade undermount to use for most of my framing.
The one I currently use is too narrow for my liking.
Where's the best place to get them, ideally Arqadia, Lion or Mainline, or what do others use?

I've never bought board just for undermounts. I use whatever mountboard I have plenty of, or any odd bits if big enough. :D

Have you tried VC 40 from Lion ?
It's brilliant :D
Size 80 x 120 cm ( 31.5 x 47 ins)
1.4mm
Also Conservation quality and FSC - they call it Undermount, but perfect also as a mount.
Little blade wear :o
Same colour all through
In packs of 25.
Lion Cat no 49 page 43.

Ticks all the boxes!

Lion's vc40 ticks all the boxes (for me) except this one:

Must be cheaper than arqadia conservation mount card

So I might as well stick to using conservation hayseed.

Arqadia hayseed is £4.05 a board - 1400 thick, conservation backing board at 1100 thick is £2.90. Surely it's better getting backing board to use exclusively for backing rather than mountboard?

Agree, it's made for the purpose and meets FATG conservation standards, even if it is the minimum thickness required. Beats me why they don't do a 1400 micron version, it jumps from 1100 to 1650.

Stocking a board, or boards, exclusively for undermounts (plus anything else you can use it for of course) simplifies things, saves you scrimping around for offcuts big enough or wondering which colour to use, that one you always have because it sells well, or that weird one that no one ever picks ............. right up until you use it for an undermount!

I use Nielsen-Bainbrdidge artcare (the microchamber/zeolite stuff) back and front as default and Nielsen, like Arqadia, also do a purpose-made undermount board called alphamount artcare (the normal mount board range is called alphamat artcare) and when it was introduced it was slightly cheaper because it had no surface paper, or rather the surface paper was the same as the backing paper, but unlike Arqadia's it does come 1400 microns.

Then one day Nielsen decided to significantly drop the price of the basic alphamat range - but the cheaper board they had made specifically for undermounts did not come under that range and ended up slightly dearer :head: So I just used whatever I had most of from the main colour range.

But thanks to this thread I've double checked my price list and I don't know if this is how it's always been but the alphamount JUMBO boards are cheaper than the alphamat jumbo boards, so I'll go back to alphamount undermounts from my next Nielsen order.

So, thanks for starting the thread!

LION's VC 40 Conservation backing board is 1400 mic and same price £2.90, providing you buy a pack of 25 sheets. Not much point in buying any less :D

Pallets of 2nds mount board 99% is a marked face paper the one we get is 1700 microns and at conservation standard it works well for us, you can only purchase with a pallet or two of good mount board or so they claim.
If this is unavailable then it's what ever I have purchased at the best price, cream core is out though.
