Storing finished frames
Hi,
Looking for some advice/thoughts.
How do you guys store your completed frames? I currently have a bench in the front shop that I have completed frames stored under....but it's obviously of a certain size so can't get any frames larger than 80cm high or 60cm wide to fit.
I therefore just have these frames sitting around the front shop....making it look really busy (which is good) but really untidy..... And leaving the opportunity of getting damaged.
Do any of you have made to measure racking shelves or do you just do the same as me and have them sitting in the shop? Okay I appreciate some of you may have a larger back shop so you can store them there but any info and/or pictures would be great.
Thanks
Ian

Re: Storing finished frames
Sometimes I hang them on the wall if they are a bit special (and I have a gap).
I do have a handy under-the-stairs cupboard, but that's mostly full up with assorted kelter.

Re: Storing finished frames
I have a purpose built racking system. 75 cubby holes, 3 x 25 small, 3 x 25 medium and 3 x 25 large (and deep). These are made to store the frames vertically. For each size (small, medium to large) there are a three different widths, again small medium and large. They are made from mdf and they are stacked, the large and deep at the bottom, medium in the middle and small on top. The cubby holes have felt on the bottom to stop any damage.
Each cubby usually holds one customers' jobs, unless obviously it's a large job which can overflow to other cubbies.
They are numbered and we keep a list. When we put a frame in the rack we enter the number on the list with the customers name. When they collect we scrub the name.
(We also have an overflow rack of a further 26 odd shaped cubby holes a-z, (currently all 75 and a-j are occupied! Woo hoo)

A picture of our storage rack, the bottom hutches are 36" tall and 30" deep, middle are 28" tall and 20" deep, top ones are 22" high, 20" deep.
The slots are mainly 3" wide with 4 of each size at 6" wide.
the slots have felt bases.

Re: Storing finished frames
Ooh very neat Abacus. Do you not wrap your frames once they are finished?

Re: Storing finished frames
Very nice Abacus. We got storage similar underneath the order table. For bigger picture frames we have upstairs storage room.

Re: Storing finished frames
We wrap the frames after the customer has ok'd them. Otherwise we'd have to wrap them and then unwrap them to show the customer, is that what you do?

Re: Storing finished frames
I wrap them with handywrap stuff so when I show them I just peel a bit back. I would end up with scores and scuffs all over mine before the customers get them as I don't have such a neat storage system.

All mine are wrapped in bubble wrap, much better protection than handy wrap

Re: Storing finished frames
Bubblewrap is great. I tape it with masking tape which is easy to peel off to show the customer the frame.

That is very true but many commercial clients want corners and handy wrap so they can see the image without unwrapping and re wrapping.
Better still is bubble wrap and the Blue Foam corners.
