Price for framing a rugby shirt in a box frame & best method
Hi there
Can anyone give me an indication what to charge for framing a rugby shirt please? I have not done many of these before, but I know they take a long time to do. However, the cost still has to be reasonable for the customer.
Also, does anyone know of a good step by step video on how to sew the shirt in place on the mount board.
Many thanks for any help.

Rugby shirts are quite big - bigger than football shirts usually. Our method brings them out at around £150 - £180 dependant upon mounts etc.
Don't know of any videos I'm afraid. Anyway Mrs D does all that stuff, but she is quite quick with a needle and thread. Longest part is fitting the former and sewing it around the former

Thanks for the advice.
Does Mrs D actually sew the rugby shirt onto the mount board, do you know? Isn't it very difficult to get the needle all the way through the piece of mount board at the back?
Thanks again.

Mrs D is not a fan of tag guns, but she uses a curved needle, but does not have too much trouble with pushing it through the mountboard. The shirt is sewn onto itself normally around the former - its only the fixing of the shirt former to the mountboard that is hard.

I do quite a lot of shirts, typically £150 to £220 depending on moulding, type of glass. BTW the super clear glass such as TruView Ultraview is superb with 3d objects such shirts.
I use a 5mm foam core former and a standard tag gun as opposed to the micro version as the latter struggles with the foam core.

We have done quite a lot for various colleges and individuals around Durham.
We charge round about the £100-£120 mark depending on the size.
The last one we did was FOUR shirts in one frame which now hangs in Aviemore and was shirts for various teams around Scotland including Aberdeen University.

We Tag onto Foamcore former, then sew this to the backing board (mountcard) our starting price is from £175.00, but we also supply a DIY frame for £75.00 (I nicked the idea from Kev@Frames at Moonshine) or if we fit it in the DIY it will cost £100.00

I stitch on to mountboard and have a few little diy tools to make 2 holes in the mountboard.
Only stitch shirts in with ballpoint needles so not to damage any threads.
I'm pretty quick at it now and I charge around £130.00 plus a few option extras and delivery.
I agree with ChrisG, the AR TruView Ultraview glass is amazing and is well worth the price and if budget is not a problem for the customer it is a must.

Re: Price for framing a rugby shirt in a box frame & best me
Hi there
Thanks for all the advice. I must admit that I am not looking forward to doing the shirt. I have only done one before and it was a while ago. I am not entirely clear how to sew the shirt onto the mount board. Obviously I need to get the needle to come from the back, through the back of the shirt and through the foamcore but not through the fron of the shirt. This must be really tricky? Any tips on doing this?
Thanks again

I gave up needle and thread for shirts years ago - well, for fixing the shirt with the former inside to the mounting board anyway - I'll still use the odd stitch here and there when it suits.
I use a tag gun - OK it may make a bigger hole than a needle, but it's still not a very big hole and if you're coming through the back of the mounting board, you can't judge the exact placement of that hole in the fabric anyway.
A couple of tips for the former (insert); measure the height and width required - cut it and lay the shirt on top of it, trace the slope/curve of one shoulder, cut the marked shoulder out and use that shape as a template to cut the exact same shape out of the other corner.
Put the insert in and trace the neck line, remove it and cut out the neck, plus a bit. Taper the insert if you like - it could be a footballer, a cyclist, a female or a rugby player that works out, but it won't be spongebob squarepants! Round all the corners off.

Yup, it's not gonna be SpongeBob
- it's a personal thing with me but I just think it's strange when the shirts are big square blocks. Nothing wrong with it but it just looks wrong to me so Robo's little tip works well.

To fix shirt&inset to mountboard, I first decide on 5 to 7 attachment points/areas. Then for each area I drill two tiny holes. The distance between the holes is the diameter of the curve in the upholstery needles.

Hi
at a recent seminar at Spring Fair at the NEC.. a reputable and very experienced framer did a demonstration of how they framed the shirtds which correlates well with RoboCop. They routinely charge £200 plus Vat and use True Vue as a standard.
They are in a well heeled area ...
cheers
