Not sure how to frame this poster...
Hi all, just looking for some input on this poster I've been given to frame. Not sure whether to use a window mount or not. Also, if I window mount should I show some of the black surround or mount right to the edge of the image. I know i's my descision but some opinions would be great!
Cheers,
Gareth

Re: Not sure how to frame this poster...
First thing is to establish whether or not it is valuable or ever likely to be. If it is just a decorative thing you can pretty much do what you like. If you have the facilities I would stick it down. Then you could choose to close-frame it with spacers or window-mount it. Personally, in this case the black border does the same job visually as a window mount, so a flat black frame around would look coooool.
If it needs conservation treatment, the first job would be to get it flat. The paper looks a bit iffy to me and I can see a finger-dent already.

Pretty sure it's just decorative. I can get it flat by taping it down to board along two edges with tessa tape. Agreed that the black frames the image well. Was thinking of possibly using a black core window mount. Where do you see the finger mark? Top right corner where the light catches it? Was maybe going to trim it down left and right which would remove this.
Re: Not sure how to frame this poster...
Don't tape it down. Put it between two sheets of mountboard and rest a few books on top. Leave it for a day or two if practical.

if you tape it down along 2 edges, then unless the temperature and humidity never change, it will ripple like a good un.
I recently tried a platform mount on quite a large thin poster and it worked remarkabley well.

That's ominous to hear. I just framed seven 13x19" prints for a guy and I tessa taped them along 2 edges. Will it have a unwelcome effect on prints that big?
As for platform mounting. What is that exactly?

Taping completely down one or two sides will not allow the paper to move where the tape is stuck to the print, but the rest of the paper can move, and therfore you will get cockling as IFGL says.
T-hinges will allow the paper to expand and contract and prevent cockling.
This is a platform mount http://theframersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8798 no adhesives in contact with the art and it can expand & contract, a true conservation method.

Just thinking about your 13 x 19 prints, are they inkjet prints? If on heavy weight paper you maybe ok? I guess it all depends on where they are hanging.

Re: Not sure how to frame this poster...
Not sure exactly what type of prints the 13x19's were but they were on heavy art paper yes. I was thinking of recalling them to hinge instead of tape them, perhaps unecessary. I know the guy well so any problem in the future and I can rectify. What sort of glue should I use for making the platform mount? Not sure I have any PVA. Is PVA archival enough or is there a better alternative to buy? Cheers

PVA is fine, just make sure it has completely dried before bobing your print in, leave enough space for expansion.

Asked if they were inkjets as 13 x 19 (A3+) is a common size. Some of the heavy art paper is more like thin card so you could be ok
I like to keep this stuff handy all the time, great for all sorts of jobs including bonding mounts together, spacers etc.

You can get it from a few suppliers including Lion & Arqadia

Here's one of them I did using the platform mounting, worked really well so cheers for that! Haven't glued it all yet, this is a dry run. Excuse the reflections.

Re: Not sure how to frame this poster...
Personally I would show some of the surround - although I can see the merits of taking the picture mount- to a few millimeters over the image.
Again it's down to personal preference I'd use an extra thick white mount (obviously using conservation mount board) and then a black block frame. Did the customer express what type of frame they wanted ?

Keep calm and carry on I use these for my Mounts and general stuff

I think this is one of the few times I would have used a black mount and black frame, because there is more to the picture for the batman fan, the black embodies the dark nature of the film and character.
we did some Batman prints, using a distressed black frame and debossed the batman logo into the mount, customer nearly wet himself
