OBJECT ATTACHMENT

Post by DEEPJOY »

Hi All help please.

I have 3 frames of space memorabilia I have to finish over the weekend.

Each one is a combination of the following:-

1. - A pin badge or broach.
2. - A cloth badge the type you would sew onto a jacket.
3 - A 60mm circular by 10mm high clear plastic case that contains a medal. Looks a wee bit like a paper weight.

All of the above need to be fixed to a backing board and a double mount sits around them.

The question is in reference to the fixing. The customer has assured me that these elements have no value and as such, he never sees any reason for them to be returned to their pre-framed state.

As a result of the above, I would prefer to use a clear sealant / mastic to set item (1) down and a strong double sided tape for the other 2. Conversational framing is not really my concern on this project, but the 2 aspect that are a concern - long term support (not like support in the community but making sure they do not fall off) for the items and discolouration the double sided tape may cause.

Item (1) yes I could sew or use the film Robo framer loves. The cloth badge again could be sewn or tag gunned on and the plastic medal cover could be supported by a Lion type supports, but based on the customers answers to my questions I want to go for ease, accuracy, strength and no future concerns for discolouration.

Your thoughts please? I am not lazy and I will do it the right way if you all gang up on me. :giggle:

I would be very reluctant to use either silicone mastic, or double sided tape. Mosy silicone mastics release significant amounts of asetic acid which may be risky on the pin badge broach and over time may have an effect upon the mountboard as well.

My other concern would be the permanence of the double sided tape, since most double sided tapes have a limited service life and can eventually fail.

For starters, I would be considering if it would be possible to sink mount the medal and it's plastic case behind the mount.

Are you able to post some photos of these items for us to see, as this would help us to be able to suggest the best course of action.

Hi just thinking about what you said, I have to be careful in reference to the rebate depth. I think with the moulding I am using it is 24mm rebate, so from the bottom up - the MDF backing board, backing mount board, 10mm height for the plastic medal holder, (double mount will sit around this plastic medal case), a bit of space below the glass and the plastic medal case. - Bobs your uncle!!

My plan was to put spacers at the sides between the glass and the top of the double mount. Do you follow?

I'd fasten them - The badge will have a pin, mount it as it would be fixed to a lapel. I'd stitch or micro tag the cloth badge. I'd lose no sleep over sticking the medal down as the important bit is inside a replaceable container - but I'd probably do a shaped melinex mount like this http://theframersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11383&p= and nothing to do with reversibility/conservation, just security - adhesive can fail in 3 ways - the adhesive itself, the mounting surface and the object's surface.
